Okay… I'm a geek. In fact, given my background as a professional comic book artist, writer, computer consultant and technology trade-show presenter, I'd venture to say I am an uber-geek. The fact that Rob Liefeld once described me exactly as such (both the fact that he described me like that AND that it was Rob Liefeld who did the describing) cements my place in uber-geekdom. But an actua honest-to-god working Tri-Corder… this is just the coolest damn thing I believe I've ever seen. More than that, I have to tip my hat to the geekier-than-me uber-geek who created it.

Tell me you don't want one… ga'head… tell me.

The Three “C’s” — Content, Connections, and Conversations.

Google’s Matt Cutts let slip at the SXSW conference that Google is rolling out new changes to their GoogleBot that will punish sites for being “over-optimized”. In short, for focusing on keywords, rather than content.

One more nail in the coffin of keyword marketing, keyword stuffing, and the importance of keywords in general. If you are doing your own SEO work and focusing on keywords, stop it. If you are hiring it out, make sure your team is up to speed on these changes. Business as usual with regard to SEO isn’t going to help you any more. Stop obsessing with keywords, start focusing on the three C’s — Content, Connections, and Conversations. Read more

Review: Marketing Grader

If you haven’t been using Hubspot’s new Marketing Grader online tool for evaluating your website, you should be. It is a terrific tool for grading your site and your overall marketing efforts. Not only does it supply a single simple to understand score, it provides a break down of how it arrived at that score by giving you percentages for Top of Funnel (TOFU), Middle of Funnel (MOFU) and Analytics.

More importantly, it gives you advice on improving your score. Most of the advice is tactical. That is, it is a specific action or actions you can initiate to see an improvement. Things like, post more often on Facebook and Twitter are tactical advice. Every so often it lapses into the general strategic areas with advice like, “write more compelling content”. Those few lapses can be forgiven, though, given the helpful nature of much of the rest of the advice.

Here are a couple of more screen shots showing pieces of Express Auto‘s marketing grader report.

Again, some of the advice is very specific (post more often), some very general. Clearly we need to Tweet more.

The Method is the Marketing

Social Media

Arguably Marshall McLuhan most famous quote, “The medium is the message,” is certainly no less true today than when he said it almost 50 years ago. For us in marketing, I’d go a step further and say, “The method is the marketing.”

I’ve been a salesman several times in my working life insurance, jewelry, and more. One of the most successful old school techniques I learned was the a five-point selling method.

  1. Personalize
  2. Promote the company
  3. Promote the product
  4. Create desire
  5. Close

This technique served me very well, and I even adapted it to selling when I a an interactive director at an advertising agency. There I was selling websites, but the technique didn’t really vary much.

Here’s where this old school methodology DOES break down — Social media. Read more

Great post from +Tom Gorham on dealing with vendors over at +Automotive Digital Marketing. If you are calling me, you should be following these tips. I got three calls last week from people "guaranteeing" to get me on page one of Google. Page one for what? How is your system affected by Google's SPY-W changes (search plus your world). How does your system deal with Google's geo-targeting? With mobile search? Don't know? Don't waste my time.

Any advice on how a business can best handle…

Any advice on how a business can best handle multiple locations on G+. +Express Auto has five locations (with more opening), but I don't want to create fives different pages. I think that dilutes the brand. So how do I list all five? Is there a trick to it? I'd like to include maps in the page for the Benton Harbor, Niles, Battle Creek and Kalamazoo locations. Right now I only have our Kalamazoo West (Stadium Dr.) location on there.

What if Spam Were True?

Very nice infographic that ponders the age-old question, “What if spam were true?” Allthough some of these I’d categorize as SCAM, not SPAM.

The Day the Earth Shook

Google Shakes Things UpOn January 10th, 2012 Google announced major changes to their search engine that have been rippling out like a tsunami through the business community. “Search Plus Your World”, or what I like to call SPY-W (SPY-Dub for short). This means that when people use Google for search, their results encompass their Google+ connections. The stated goal is to make search more relevant by making the results more personalized; taking into account your social connections. Assume that the underlying motivation is to serve more targeted and more relevant ads, since (like any other company)Google is actually motivated by finding ways to increase profits. More relevant means more clicks; more clicks means more cash. Read more
